Bipolar Recovery

People who receive a medical diagnosis often ask, "Can it be cured?". When I asked about recovery from my bipolar diagnosis, I was told it was not the right question. It took me a few years to realise the acceptable question in this part of the world is something like,

Having some answers to these questions helped me a little. Then I started to wonder what it was that I was recovering from and why would I want a 'normal' life whatever that might be?

Mental health professionals now talk about 'recovery' from all types mental health diagnoses. Many now recognise the phrase, 'bipolar recovery'. Can anyone say what this means?

I have talked with experts who say they are keeping bipolar people 'in recovery' by helping them avoid relapses and minimising the damage the disorder causes. I guess in recovery is better than ill, sick, relapse...

I have talked with experts who themselves have been diagnosed and believe more than a full recovery is possible so that they can lead more effective meaningful lives having been through the bipolar disorder experience.

Having the diagnosis myself I like the ideas of:

In 2006 I decided my business would be about "Making Bipolar Recovery A Reality". Was this a realistic aim or just a fantasy?

I feel that things have moved on a lot since then and it is time I did my bit in explaining bipolar recovery.

I am hoping that as this web site evolves it will provide information for:

> those just coming to terms with a diagnosis

> bipolar people in-recovery

> relatives and friends of those affected

> health professionals

> others like myself believing recovery is important whilst there is more to life than simply being in-recovery forever.
